Secret Service, FBI respond to reports of ‘shots fired’ near White House

Reports from multiple U.S. media outlets say the incident near the White House involved a gunman who allegedly opened fire at a Secret Service checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue on Saturday evening. Secret Service officers returned fire, and the suspect later died from injuries. A bystander was also wounded, while no Secret Service agents were reported injured.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed it was assisting the United States Secret Service in responding to the shooting. The White House was briefly placed on lockdown during the incident.

Several outlets reported that President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time but was unharmed. Witnesses and journalists nearby described hearing multiple gunshots before security personnel moved reporters into shelter areas.

Authorities are still investigating the motive and exact sequence of events.
